Date: March 5, 2002

Dispatch: Carthage Fire Department, Carthage Police and Carthage Area Rescue Squad were dispatched to 261 State Street at 5:49 a.m. for a report of smoke in the building. Carthage Engine 11-1-1 arrived on scene reporting a structure fire. While firefighters were arriving, Carthage patrolman Kurt LaValley entered the building to start the evacuation. Light to moderate smoke was seen from the front of the building while flames and heavy black smoke was reported at the rear of the building.
