March 7, 4 p.m.

There is no visible smoke today.

Property owners said at a meeting of the village board last evening that the clean-up costs will just about cancel the insurance they expect to get - leaving nothing for rebuilding.

Is this rubble contaminated with asbestos? Some property owners want proof - the abatement fees could double cleanup costs.

The fire companies that came to the assistance of Carthage on Saturday lost tens of thousands of dollars of gear. The equipment, large and small, from hoses to axes was lost when firefighters were forced to abandon it while exiting the buildings when the fire flashed above them. The decisions to leave behind the equipment in burning, collapsing buildings were a wise one that probably resulted in lives saved.
